To coincide with Mental Health Day (9 October 2026), Portsmouth residents were invited to experience a lively pickleball coaching session at Mountbatten Leisure Centre in Hilsea.
In partnership with Portsmouth Interaction, the session was delivered by Ann Jago, who coaches the University of Portsmouth Pickleball team. It attracted both newcomers and existing players keen to improve their skills in a friendly atmosphere that has become a hallmark of the sport.
Pickleball is one of the UK's fastest-growing sports. It combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, making it accessible to all ages and abilities. Easy to learn and great fun to play, it has seen a surge in popularity across the country as more people discover its social and health benefits.
Participants at the Mountbatten Leisure Centre enjoyed expert coaching, practical drills and plenty of match play, with laughter often echoing around the courts. The emphasis was firmly on enjoyment, participation and building confidence, whether players were picking up a paddle for the first time or looking to develop their game.
On behalf of the Mountbatten Leisure Centre and Portsmouth Interaction, manager Kerry Morgan, welcomed the growing interest in the sport.
"Pickleball is a fantastic way for people to stay active, meet new friends and have fun," said Kerry. "We're delighted to see so many people getting involved and discovering what makes the game so enjoyable."
Coach Ann Jago highlighted the inclusive nature of the sport.
"One of the great things about pickleball is that almost anyone can play," she said. "You don't need previous racket sport experience, and people quickly gain confidence and start enjoying competitive rallies. It's a sport that brings people together."
The coaching session formed part of ongoing efforts to introduce more local residents to pickleball and encourage active lifestyles within the community.
Anybody interested in giving the sport a try is encouraged to visit Mountbatten Leisure Centre and join one of the regular sessions.
Kerry added,
“As the enthusiasm on court demonstrated, pickleball is proving to be much more than just a game – it's a welcoming community where everyone can enjoy exercise, friendship and plenty of fun.”
